Pride and Prejudice as Creating Forces of Cosmopolitan Perspective in Comparative Literature

Choon-hee Kim (Republic of Korea)

Contents:

Hippias: All of you who are here present I reckon to be kinsmen and friends and fellow-citizens, by nature and not by law[convention]; for by nature like is akin to like, whereas law is the tyrant of mankind, and often compels us to do many things which are against nature.

PLATO: PROTAGORAS

The purpose of this seminar is to define the ways of how comparative mind variously functions in terms of both pride and prejudice in the history of comparative literary studies.

For this, we will discuss:

- “what is pride” or/and “what is prejudice” in the multicultural conditions of the world, and

- how do these two intervene in national identity consciousness and cosmopolitan mind formation.

This will be done by analyzing specifically cosmopolitan literary concerns raised continuously in comparative literary studies.

I invite the papers which participate in discussing 'pride' and 'prejudice' as creating factors of moral-aesthetic cosmopolitan mind.

The languages of the seminar are English and French.
