Prix Balakian
The Anna Balakian Prize
As reported in the Bulletin of the International Comparative Literature Association, vol. 22.2, the establishment of the Anna Balakian Prize was officially announced on August 14, 2004, at the XVIIth Congress of the ICLA in Hong Kong. The Prize, consisting of US$1,000, has been jointly donated by the family of Anna Balakian and Friends of the ICLA. It is intended to promote scholarly research by younger comparatists and to honor the memory of Professor Anna Balakian, a great comparatist. It will be awarded at the next ICLA Congress in Paris (July 18–24, 2013) for an outstanding first book in comparative literature studies by a single author under forty years of age. For the period 2010–2013, jury will be chaired by Prof Monika Schmitz-Emans (Bochum), and includes two other distinguished senior scholars. The jury is charged with soliciting nominations in conjunction with other members of the Executive Council, judging submissions, and selecting the winner.
Rules for Submitting Books
Books published from January 2010 through December 2012 are eligible for the 2013 prize. The winner will be named in early 2013, and the Prize will be bestowed at the Congress of 2013.
Books can be submitted if they are a first book in comparative literature studies by an author under forty years of age at the time of the publication of the book. The books must have a literary-critical approach, dealing with such areas as the following through a comparative optic: literary aesthetics or poetics, literature and the arts, literary movements, historical or biographical influences on literature, cross-fertilization of regional or national literatures, literary criticism on an international plane. Studies that are primarily ethnic or gender-related or restricted to a single literature are not eligible for the Prize. In this round electronic publications are excluded.
Books which are not in English or French, the official languages of the ICLA, should be accompanied by a summary in English or French of at least 2,000 words.
An author may propose him
- or herself for the Prize, preferably with a recommendation by a former dissertation or research supervisor or senior comparatist. Any member of the ICLA may also propose candidates for the Prize. It is, however, exclusively the responsibility of the author to provide the office of the ICLA President with three copies of the book or one book and two photocopies. If letters of recommendation have been solicited by the candidate, three copies should also be included with the submission of book. All material must reach the office of the ICLA President by January 15, 2013. The author should also provide a permanent mailing address as well as his or her current e-mail address. The address of the office of the President is Prof. Steven P. Sondrup, Brigham Young University, 3025 JFSB, Provo, UT 84602, USA. In principle, the books will not be returned; they will rather be donated to a library or be given another appropriate scholarly organization.
The winner will be invited to attend the ICLA Congress in order to receive the award. Travel costs will be reimbursed by the ICLA Treasurer up to a maximum of US$1,000.
Information About the Selection Process
The President of the ICLA acknowledges receipt of the books (or book and photocopies) and forwards them to the members of the jury.
The members of the jury are free to seek appropriate advice from relevant experts, for instance in the case of publications in languages they cannot read. Such advice remains confidential.
The members of the jury decide by majority of votes.
Once the members of the jury have determined the winner, they will write a report explaining the merits of the book. This report will be offered to the President and the Secretaries of the ICLA at least three months before the next ICLA Congress. At the same time, the winner will be notified. The report will be read on the bestowal of the Prize and posted on the ICLA website.
