Une synthèse.

Le projet d'un réseau comparatiste européen a été lancé à l'automne 1999, au lendemain du congrès SFLGC de Lille, par Danièle Chauvin, présidente de la SFLGC (1999-2001) et par Bertrand Westphal, vice-président chargé des relations internationales (1999-2003), puis chargé de mission auprès du REELC (2003-). Après une phase liminaire consacrée à des prises de contacts à travers toute l'Europe, les deux promoteurs ont organisé une première rencontre du Réseau en Sorbonne, à Paris IV, le 6 octobre 2001. En présence de représentants de quatorze associations comparatistes européennes, soutenus à distance par cinq associations supplémentaires, le Réseau Européen d'Etudes Littéraires Comparées / European Network of Comparative Literary Studies (REELC/ENCLS) a officiellement vu le jour à cette occasion. Dès le départ, ce réseau avait pour vocation de faciliter la communication entre les comparatistes européens par le biais d'un site Internet cogéré et l'organisation commune d'événements à portée internationale. Lors de la rencontre parisienne, Mario Domenichelli, président de l'association italienne, a été élu coordonnateur général du réseau (2001-2003).

Les 2 et 3 mai 2003, la première réunion officielle du RELLC/ENCLS a eu lieu à l'Académie Royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, à Bruxelles. Organisée par Bart Keunen, président de l'association belge, cette rencontre a permis aux représentants des quinze associations présentes de poursuivre la réflexion sur les moyens de concrétiser le projet. Plusieurs initiatives étaient destinées à renforcer la structure du réseau ainsi qu'à affirmer son identité : la préparation du texte d'une charte, la désignation d'un webmaster (Duncan Large), l'élection d'un bureau chargé de veiller à la coordination des actions (sous la conduite de Mario Domenichelli, dont le mandat avait été reconduit pour la période 2003-2005), le choix du site du premier congrès du REELC : Florence 2005 (M.Domenichelli). Comme à Paris un an et demi plus tôt, les participants ont travaillé à Bruxelles dans un climat de consensus fort encourageant.

Un intervalle d'un peu plus de deux ans s'est écoulé entre la rencontre bruxelloise et le congrès de Florence qui, comme prévu, s'est déroulé du 15 au 17 septembre 2005. Ce laps de temps était nécessaire à la poursuite du travail de structuration du réseau. Clé de voûte de l'édifice, le site Internet avait connu quelques difficultés à partir de l'automne 2003. Il a été envisagé de trouver une alternative. En revanche, le programme du réseau n'a cessé de prendre corps, notamment sous l'impulsion de Mario Domenichelli, Bart Keunen, Lucia Boldrini, Markus Winkler et Bertrand Westphal.

Organisé dans d'excellentes conditions par M.Domenichelli, le congrès de Florence a conduit à des résultats plus qu'appréciables. Consacré aux « Dialectes de la tribu », il a réuni près d'une centaine de comparatistes et de linguistes issus d'une quinzaine de pays et a donné lieu à des débats dont la tenue scientifique était de l'avis général remarquable. La réunion de l'assemblée générale du REELC, le 16 septembre, a une nouvelle fois permis d'affiner la programmation des activités à venir ; elle a aussi conduit à une redistribution des rôles.

En voici les principaux résultats :

1. Le texte de la charte du REELC, esquissé à Bruxelles, puis complété en cours de mandat, a été approuvé à l'unanimité. Mais ce texte est encore susceptible d'évoluer d'ici 2007 (en fonction des propositions et suggestions que l'on pourra collecter).

2. Lucia Boldrini, du Goldsmiths College de l'Université de Londres, succède à Mario Domenichelli à la tête de la coordination du réseau (2005-2007). Coordonnées : l.boldrini@gold.ac.uk

3. Ales Vaupotic (Université de Ljubljana), qui sera épaulé par Markus Winkler (Université de Genève), montera le site web du réseau, dont l'arborescence a été précisée. 4. Alain Montandon (IUF, Université Blaise-Pascal) organisera le deuxième congrès du REELC au cours de l'automne 2007 (le rythme des congrès du réseau étant biennal).

A l'issue du congrès de Florence, on notera que les 22 associations suivantes ont tour à tour adhéré aux activités du REELC : Allemagne, Autriche, Belgique, Bulgarie, Chypre, Danemark, Espagne, Estonie, Finlande, France, Grèce, Hongrie, Italie, Lituanie, Macédoine, Pays-Bas, Pologne, Portugal, Roumanie, Royaume Uni, Slovénie, Suisse.

Voici le compte rendu de l'Assemblée générale du REELC/ENCLS, que Lucia Boldrini a préparé à l'issue du congrès de Florence :

A General Assembly of the REELC/ENCLS was held at the Rotonda Brunelleschi in Florence on 16 September 2005, from 18.30 to 20.00, in the context of the Conference “The Dialects of the Tribe”, Florence 15-17 September 2005. The Assembly was chaired by the outgoing General Coordinator of the Réseau/Network, Prof. Mario Domenichelli.

Items discussed:

Website.

An offer to set up and manage the website was received from Jola Skulj and Ales Vaupotic of the University of Ljubliana. ZRC-SAZU would provide technical help and server space. Ales Vaupotic would be the Webmaster. The offer was conditional to: a) a clear explanation (to be given at the meeting and confirmed in writing) of what the REELC/ENCLS wants from the website and how the material would be submitted; b) the agreement of ZRC-SAZU (to be sought by our Slovenian colleagues as soon as possible after the meeting).

It was agreed that the webpage would contain information on what the REELC/ENCLS is, its Charter, its officers, and provide databases for:



- announcements (e.g. conferences, calls for papers...)



- student and teacher mobility (e.g. postdoctoral posts, visiting professors)



- PhD theses (e.g. titles, institutions, abstracts)



- list of members with contact details and areas of research/teaching interests (and relevant links, e.g. to personal webpages, research projects etc.)



- research projects



- existing doctoral and postdoctoral courses and schools



- job vacancies

Other databases / pages that would be of interest are: lists of national associations with links to their webpages when they exist; summer schools; relevant publications, with links to those available online.

The question of the language(s) to be used was discussed at length. The majority was in favour of publishing information in whatever language it was issued (e.g. a call for paper posted in French would remain in French); crucially, there is no expectation that the webmaster translate information received. It is hoped that members will send information to the webmaster in more than one language when possible or relevant.

Ales Vaupotic will liase with Markus Winkler re the possibility of a mirror site located in Switzerland (this would ensure that if a server is down, the other will still available), and possible translation of key information / webpage instructions in French. Bertrand Westphal will initially act as link between Ales and Markus.

The question of whether the instructions on the page itself should be in English or English and French was not resolved, but the majority was in favour of the simpler, cleaner solution. It was generally felt that Ales's and the Slovenian team's expertise should guide us on technical matters.

A list-serve and the distribution of information between the website and the list-serve was also discussed.

Ales Vaupotic was nominated Webmaster of REELC/ENCLS (subject to his institution's confirmation of the offer).

The Assembly expressed their warmest thanks to Ales, and to Jola for her good office in ensuring a solution to what was becoming a serious problem for the REELC/ENCLS.

Charter.

The Charter was approved with some corrections concerning: name; representatives from national associations; officers' roles; clearer division between a Council and an Executive Committee. Bart Keunen will write in these corrections. The revised Charter will then be circulated to all members. It was accepted that some further revisions may be required between now and the 2007 conference (e.g. on the question of members registration, membership fees etc. For the moment membership of the REELC/ENCLS remains free and open to all).

Election of New Officers.

The term of office of all officers elected in Brussels in 2003 came to an end. The General Coordinator, Mario Domenichelli, indicated that he did not wish to stand again in that role. Lucia Boldrini was elected General Coordinator 2005-2007. She made it clear that she was prepared to undertake this role only if supported by a “committee of committed officers” willing to help. Because of time pressure, apart from the Webmaster, the remaining 7 officers were not elected on this occasion, and it was left to the new General Coordinator to solicit members of the Council to act as officers. Of the existing officers that were present (who can be re-elected for a second term), Lucia Boldrini asked Monica Spiridon, Bart Keunen and Bertrand Westphal, and Mario Domenichelli as immediate past CG, to continue as serving officers on the Executive Committee. Jola Skulj was invited to (and had offered to) continue to support the Committee, especially in relation to the website, though she did not feel she could act as Officer.

The General Coordinator undertook to contact all existing national representatives and/or national associations to ensure that all European countries are represented in the Council.

2007 Conference.

There being no other offer, Prof. Alain Montandon offered to host the 2007 REELC/ENCLS conference in Clermont Ferrand, within his funded project on the life of literary genres.

The Assembly expressed their gratitude to Prof. Montandon for coming to the rescue.Three priorities were affirmed: A scientific committee will have to be appointed; financial help should be offered to delegates who wish to participate but have scarce resources; efforts must be made to integrate and not sideline young researchers.

Prof.Chauvin's motion.

Danièle Chauvin moved to thank Mario Domenichelli for the successful organisation of “The Dialects of the Tribes” and for having brilliantly overcome the difficulties encountered by the project in its early stages. The Assembly warmly supported Prof. Chauvin's motion and expressed its thanks to Prof. Domenichelli.

Funding.

Bart Keunen wished to discuss an idea for funding but as there was no time, the discussion would take place between him and the General Coordinator at the first available opportunity.
